Abstract: My career investigating developmental language disorder goes back to the 1970s, when there were numerous obstacles in the path of researchers. First, there were practical difficulties in devising and running experimental studies; second, there was little recognition of children’s language disorders, which was a Cinderella subject, with limited research funding. Things are very different now. Part of the transformation has been due to technological developments: it is much easier to create experimental materials, to collect and analyse data, and even to develop online interventions. In addition, there is now much broader consensus about criteria and terminology, which has improved communication between researchers, practitioners and people affected by developmental language disorder.
